Sonia Aimy
If anyone can persuasively bring together African cultures with the rest of the world through music and action, it is Sonia Oduwa Aimy. With her voice of shimmering velvet, her infectious energy and soulful appeal, Nigerian-born, Italian-trained and Canadian-based Sonia spreads joy as she irresistibly blends Afro-jazz, Afrobeat, highlife, and the African griot call-and-response tradition. Her joie de vivre and indomitable spirit shine through in her performances and her recordings. “(Her music) will give you hope, happiness, and emotional sensations,” one reviewer wrote.
Sonia’s 10-track 2024 album, Light-Imole, on her Saimy’s Art and Believe/Slammin Media label, represents a deepening spirituality, connectedness to the earth, and encouragement in these complex, changing times. As she sings in her song Believe: “Just trust in yourself…Search within yourself, And you will find the truth you are looking for.”
Light-Imole was inspired by Sonia’s birthplace, and by her global experiences and perspectives on life, events, and aspirations. Apart from an indigenous Australian folksong, all the songs were written (in English, Italian and her native Edo language), composed and arranged by Sonia. MI’Kmaq singer-songwriter Esther Jane Willow joins her on Sel Senapa (“When the sun set”). Light-Imole is a natural sequel to both Sonia’s well received 2021 album Reconnect – her response to the dejection she felt during the Covid-19 lockdown – and her self-produced 2017 album Nigerian Spirit.
Sonia is also a gifted actress, producer, director, and committed activist. Her film TRACE: Tracing African Canadian Extraordinaire, co-produced with Kennedy Seed, with Government of Canada funding, celebrates seven diverse African Canadian leaders who have made a strong impact. Sonia also wrote, sang and danced to its title song on the video. It premiered in Toronto during Black History Month in 2023, and has won over 100 awards globally.
